Construction Season
The paving project in Bloomsburg on Main Street, Route 11, is about to resume. Starting on Sunday night at 6:30 there will be no parking on Main Street from James Avenue to West Street. Then Monday from 6:30 pm to 6:00 am Tuesday there is no parking on Route 11 from Railroad to Whitman. There are other parts of Route 11 that will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week. We’ll keep you updated on air every morning.

National Peace Officers Memorial Day
This is National Police Week, a week set aside to think about the job law enforcement does. Today is the observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor police officers that have died in the line of duty. With all of the risk involved when an officer responds to a call, Bloomsburg Police Chief Leo Sokoloski says sometimes the work is tougher on the families. Sokoloski says officers can’t think about the dangers of the job every time they get a call. He told us one Bloomsburg officer has been killed in the line of duty, back in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s when a vehicle hit the Chief when he was on call.

Flood Protection Project
The federal government gave approval for work to start on a design for flood protection in Bloomsburg, but now the town has to come up with $66,000 of it’s own this year or the grant may be lost. The Press Enterprise reports that Mayor Dan Knorr said the town may borrow from other accounts. The town did not plan on any money going to the flood protection project in this year’s budget.

Voter ID Requirements
Some House Republicans in Harrisburg made a proposal this week that would require all Pennsylvania voters to provide proof of identification before casting their vote. That brought out strong comments from Philadelphia Representative Babette Josephs who asks why should you have to show ID to vote. Indiana has a similar law that was upheld by the Supreme Court.

Animal Lovers Unite

Dog lovers converged on the Capitol steps to support newly introduced legislation aimed at improving conditions in Pennsylvania’s commercial breeding kennels. Proponents of the bills intended to tighten licensing standards said they target operators of “puppy mills.” The “puppy mills” house dogs, without fear of penalty, in small cages, with no heat, no opportunity for exercise, and no routine medical care.

Hunters Beware of Lead Bullets
IT could be a concern for deer hunters or any one who has venison in their freezer. A report on IdahoStatesman.com says that a new study shows that animals killed with lead bullets contaminate the meat. The study showed that processed venison sampled in Wyoming showed that eighty percent had metal fragments and ninety percent was lead. Some states are calling for a ban on lead bullets. Amounts of lead previously considered safe in adults are now known to increase rates of death from heart attack and stroke.

Mount Airy Casino Investigation
Several Republicans in the State House are asking the Attorney General to investigate allegations that the Gaming Control Board interfered in the background investigation regarding Mount Airy Casino owner Louis DeNaples, who has since been indicted on charges of perjury. Allegations first appeared in a story in the “Allentown Morning Call.” A spokesman for the Gaming Control Board rejects such claims and says all members followed all rules.
